PFAS in Water Study -

Assessing Water Quality across Colorado’s headwaters

42 sample sites and 150+ samples over the course of 24 months.

Overview:

The Blue Elements 2024-2025 PFAS in Water Study focuses on assessing the occurrence, concentration, and seasonal patterns of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in surface water, groundwater, and treated drinking water across Colorado. PFAS, a group of synthetic chemicals linked to potential health risks, have raised concerns about water safety. This study is critical in understanding how PFAS impact local watersheds and informs mitigation strategies.

Study Objectives:

  • Measure PFAS presence and concentration across various water sources (surface water, groundwater, and treated drinking water).

  • Evaluate public health risks by assessing PFAS in drinking water.

  • Identify sources of contamination by understanding PFAS levels in raw water sources.

  • Track seasonal fluctuations to determine if certain times of the year experience higher contamination levels.

  • Support broader monitoring efforts by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) to improve water quality management.

Key Findings:

  • PFAS Detected: PFAS compounds were found in 82% of study sites.

  • Seasonal Trends: The highest PFAS concentrations were found during the spring and summer months (April and June).

  • Drinking Water: 50% of systems had detectable levels of PFAS, but most were below the EPA's proposed guidelines.

  • Hotspots: Tenmile Creek and Rifle Creek showed relatively high PFAS levels.

  • Consistent PFAS presence: Compounds PFHxA, PFBA, PFBS, PFOA, PFOS, and FOSA were among the most frequently detected.

Conclusion:

The study highlights the importance of continuous monitoring for PFAS in Colorado’s water systems, especially in areas with higher concentrations. The data gathered will inform future mitigation strategies and policy decisions for improving water quality and protecting public health.
